EU Law expert Professor Michael Dougan analyses Theresa May’s Brexit speech.

He initially considers the Prime Minister’s position on the single market before looking at her views on the customs union. He then looks at the proposed co-operation on research, crime and security and timescales.

In summary, Professor Dougan discusses some of the tensions and contradictions he thinks the speech reveals, before considering the “serious trade threat” to turn the UK into a low tax haven.

Professor Michael Dougan is Professor or European Law, and Jean Monet Chair in EU Law, at University of Liverpool Law School.
