On Tuesday 8th September – my 73rd birthday – I will be stepping down as Chair of Bremain after 10 years of service. After a decade of campaigning, it’s time to put husband Steve first and to fulfil our long-awaited retirement plans – to see more of this amazing country we are privileged to call home.
The events of the last 10 years have given me a taste for politics that I never dreamed possible or desirable. Whilst I sometimes wish I could go back to the bliss of political ignorance, I think I’m now hooked for life!
While I step aside with very mixed feelings, I won’t be leaving Bremain – or the campaign to rejoin the EU – altogether. I plan to continue attending pro-EU events, rallies and marches and aim to provide support from behind the scenes. I will also remain a member of the Bremain council, with the title of Patron.
What has made this decision a little easier is that I can say with the greatest of confidence that I leave Bremain in the best of hands. Every one of the dedicated, tireless, Bremain council have been a pleasure to work with and I count them all as dear friends. But I must give a special mention to my Vice Chair, Lisa Burton, who (with the approval of our members at our forthcoming AGM) will take over the reins as the new Chair. I couldn’t have wished for a better replacement and I’m sure that a new pair of eyes and new ideas will benefit all of our members moving forward.
I would also like to thank all of our volunteers and members for their years of support, their involvement and their loyalty. It has been an honour and a privilege to serve you all.
